Clients come from a few blocks away in Oak Lawn, from the other side of Ridgeland in Chicago Ridge, and from Evergreen Park, Burbank, Bridgeview, Hometown, Worth, Alsip and Palos Hills — usually because a friend or a sister sent them.
The shop is small on purpose. Mary works with one client at a time, so a colour correction is not rushed to make room for the next appointment, and a nervous first-time client gets the whole conversation before anything is mixed. It is a women-only salon, and for many of the families who come here that privacy is the reason they keep coming back for cuts, colour, perms, keratin, updos and threading.
